The stove, refrigerator, utensils, and other supplies are designed so that small groups can participate in weekly cooking classes \u00a0These are part of a series of independent living skills courses offered at the Center. MAC is pleased to help enable a program that makes an immediate impact on the lives of its participants.<\/span><\/h3>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\t<\/div>\n\t<\/section><section   class=\"fw-main-row-custom  auto  fw-section-position-back the kitchen. \u00a0Parking ourselves at the counter, we slice vegetables or cheese, nibble a bit of this, have a sip of that, and time flies. \u00a0There are times we haven\u2019t left the kitchen all evening \u2014 that feeling of warmth with friends and food was right where we wanted to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanging out in the kitchen at AISI with Tazo, Irakli, Nika, Dato, Ali, and Nino as they prepared lunch was just like that. \u00a0Only, they were the friends, and we got to be spectators witnessing the fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come on in. \u00a0The room is well lit, cheery, everyone has a task. \u00a0One is grating tomatoes for sauce, another washing lettuce at the sink; one is cracking eggs, another slicing onions. \u00a0They are quiet at first, as our being there has undoubtedly interrupted their warmth and safety. We notice they have big bright grins as they joke with each other, but when I ask a question, hoping for a look and one of those smiles, I get a forced frown. \u00a0Nika\u2019s trying to play grumpy, but that won\u2019t last. They know what to do in this space; they need little instruction from Natia, their supervisor. We stand around, watching, beginning to ask questions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I say something to Nino, who shows me the badge on a lanyard she wears around her neck: \u201cAssistant.\u201d \u00a0A big smile sneaks out. We sit down next to her as she grates tomatoes for sauce. I ask what she\u2019s making for lunch. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChizhipizhi,\u201d \u00a0she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChizhi . . what?\u201d \u00a0I laugh. What is that word? \u00a0Everyone laughs now as I try, repeatedly, to pronounce this dish they are preparing. \u00a0I come to find out it\u2019s the snazziest name ever for something in the family of an open-faced egg and tomato sandwich. \u00a0Chizhipizhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nino focuses on grating the tomatoes as her supervisor, Natia, tells us more. \u00a0Nino, she says, walks to AISI every day from her home nearby. Nino and the rest of the group plan the meals they want to eat, make grocery lists, shop for the food, and prepare the food together. \u00a0They eat the meals they\u2019ve made, and, if they have extra, they share with others at the center. The others like when they do\u2014especially chizhipizhi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIn their families, it\u2019s common that they are not allowed to do these things, because [their parents] are overprotective, not because they are not able,\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explained Natia. \u00a0And, though they have special needs related to their diagnoses of epilepsy, cerebral palsy, or intellectual disability; they are clearly capable and eager to do this work. \u00a0Cucumbers are peeled; garlic is chopped. \u201cNow I know how to fry an egg, make potatoes, cut an onion,\u201d reported Dato, who told us he has enjoyed the cooking classes so much he would like to study cooking further, maybe get a job in a restaurant someday. \u00a0\u201cI was so impressed with the Caesar salad I made the other day that I took pictures of it and showed it to girls I met,\u201d boasted Dato. Temo and I encouraged him \u2014 indeed, one just might find a way to a woman\u2019s heart through food. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dato, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child, arrived a little later, after the cooking was underway. \u00a0Once he sat down, though, the group's energy level almost immediately picked up. More smiles, more laughs. More time, more questions. Soon we were hearing about poetry, music, acting, and, \u201cDo you know Tazo is an artist?\u201d \u00a0Before we knew it, we were heading down the hall to find a piano, so Nika could sing us a song.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the cooking classes have only been on since October, it is obvious they have a good thi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ng going. \u00a0We witnessed firsthand the skills these individuals have learned and heard stories of how these skills are leading to increased independence, self confidence, and ideas for the future.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plans are in the works to invite parents in for a meal prepared by their children. \u00a0Imagine the wonder and pride in that room as they, too, see what this group can do.<\/span><\/p>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><div id=\"column-69e148e28d060\" class=\"fw-col-sm-4 tf-sh-2b9d9edeefb9a06c1b4fa60d46a0f8e0\" >\n\t<div class=\"fw-wrap-col-inner clearfix  \"   >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"fw-col-inner\">\n\t\t\t\n\t\n\t\t<div class=\"fw-block-image-parent  \"  style=\"width: 100%;
